Car Park Coatings Explained

Understand what a traffic deck coating is designed to do.

Key point

Car park coatings are layered resin systems that provide a traffic wearing surface and, where specified, waterproofing or movement accommodation. Their suitability depends on the complete build-up, substrate and deck conditions.

A complete coating system

A resin coating is a build-up of compatible layers applied to a suitably prepared substrate. Depending on the deck, it may combine primer, membrane, wearing course, aggregate and sealer. A decorative paint finish does not necessarily perform the same job.

Separate the performance requirements

Wear resistance, texture, waterproofing and crack bridging are distinct requirements. Record which apply to each zone rather than assuming one resin finish is suitable throughout the structure.

Bring the interfaces into scope

Drains, joints, ramps and thresholds need coordinated details. Preparation and repairs are part of the installation package, not an afterthought.

Specification evidence

Request current technical data for the proposed complete system. Confirm the relevant preparation method, moisture limits, movement capability, layer build-up, surface texture, application conditions and return-to-service requirements before installation.
