Key point
Crack bridging helps a specified coating accommodate defined substrate cracking within its tested limits. It does not replace structural repairs or a suitable expansion-joint detail.

Understand the cracking
Record crack widths, locations and evidence of movement. Where cracking suggests a structural problem, seek appropriate engineering investigation before specifying a coating repair.
Distinguish crack bridging from joint movement
A coating’s tested crack-bridging capability is not the same as its ability to span an expansion joint. Movement joints normally require a separate compatible detail.
Verify system performance
Confirm the relevant test method, temperature, layer build-up and limitations in current technical data. Do not transfer a rating from one product or layer to a different system.
Specification evidence
Request current technical data for the proposed complete system. Confirm the relevant preparation method, moisture limits, movement capability, layer build-up, surface texture, application conditions and return-to-service requirements before installation.
