TECHNICAL RESOURCE

Chloride Attack in Multi-Storey Car Parks

Water and de-icing salts can affect reinforced concrete.

Key point

Salts and water can reach reinforced concrete through defects and failed interfaces. Assess corrosion and concrete deterioration before treating a new surface coating as the complete repair.

Recognise exposure routes

Vehicles can bring water and salts onto decks. Cracks, damaged coatings and failed joints may allow contaminants to reach the concrete below.

Assess deterioration

Spalling, rust staining and exposed reinforcement warrant assessment. A surface coating is not a substitute for investigating corrosion or defining appropriate concrete repairs.

Coordinate protection and repairs

Agree repair scope with the relevant specialist and specify suitable surface protection afterwards. Ongoing inspection of joints, drainage and damaged coatings supports the maintenance plan.

Specification evidence

Request current technical data for the proposed complete system. Confirm the relevant preparation method, moisture limits, movement capability, layer build-up, surface texture, application conditions and return-to-service requirements before installation.
