Key point
Structural movement joints need their own suitable detail. Coordinate the joint’s movement capacity, traffic loading and waterproofing connection with the adjoining deck coating.

Identify the joint function
Establish the joint location, movement requirement and existing condition. Do not assume that a coating can bridge a structural movement joint.
Choose compatible interfaces
The waterproofing and traffic surface must connect to the selected joint detail. Vehicle loads, water management and levels influence that junction.
Plan inspection and replacement
Retain access to inspect the joint and record maintenance requirements. A failed joint may permit leakage even when the surrounding deck finish is intact.
Specification evidence
Request current technical data for the proposed complete system. Confirm the relevant preparation method, moisture limits, movement capability, layer build-up, surface texture, application conditions and return-to-service requirements before installation.
